Öncü tops Friday in Aragón – Sasaki in provisional Q2
Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Deniz Öncü had a flying start to the 13th round of the 2021 Moto3 World Championship in Spain today. After he got re-used to the MotorLand Aragón circuit in FP1 this morning, he went 1.118 seconds faster in Free Practice two to claim the lead of the hard-fought category.
Meanwhile Ayumu Sasaki, who was in P15 at the end of the first session this weekend lowered his lap time in the hot afternoon by 0.962 seconds and therewith managed to make up two positions in order to make it to the overnight Q2 positions by the end of day one, eager to further move forward in FP3 tomorrow morning at 9.00 local time.
Deniz Öncü, Position: 1st, Time: 1:58.929, Laps: 28: “To start the first day in P1 is something really good and I think it’s the first time this season. We have been working a lot throughout today, as this morning our setup was not perfect, but we are improving. So, overall, I’m very happy about this Friday!”
Ayumu Sasaki, Position: 13th, Time: 1:59.364, Laps: 28: “It was a decent opening day. Results-wise I guess it’s ok. My feeling is ok as well, but we have to improve in a few places tomorrow. At the moment we are four tenths off from Deniz, but if we manage to improve the points I have in mind, I think we can be there at the front as well. There’s not so much to worry about, but there are definitely things we have to change. I think we can make another step tomorrow morning, go straight to Q2 and hopefully have a good Qualifying.”
