Martín Wins At Indonesian GP To Extend MotoGP Title Lead Over Rival Bagnaia [Photo Gallery]

Jorge Martín held his nerve to bank his third 2024 win when he led every lap from pole position to edge out MotoGP rookie Pedro Acosta with title rival Francesco Bagnaia third to leave the Spaniard 21 points ahead in the home straight of the title season. Here is all you need to know:

– After crashing out of the sprint race on Saturday to gift the win to reigning two-time MotoGP champion Bagnaia, Martín kept supreme focus in a chaotic race right from the start line.

– The Spaniard got ahead of Italy’s Enea Bastianini and Acosta, then Australian Jack Miller sparked a pile-up at Turn 3 which also took out Spaniards Álex Márquez and Aleix Espargaró plus Italian Luca Marini.

– Just when Bastianini looked set to challenge Martín and Acosta at the front, he crashed at Turn 1 to leave Martín clear at the front for the win from Acosta and which elevated Bagnaia to the podium.

– After he crashed out when leading the 2023 race, a relieved Martín, 26, said: “After last season’s crash and yesterday’s crash also, today was a difficult race. After 13 laps I had some ghosts on my mind in corner 11, and then every lap in corner 16. I was trying to be really careful. We had a lot of wind from the side in that part. Acosta was incredible, he was pushing.”

– South African Brad Binder was eighth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and Frenchman Johann Zarco ninth, however there were also DNFs for six-time MotoGP champion Marc Márquez and Spaniard Augusto Fernández.

– It looks to have spelled the end of Marc Márquez’s title charge after a superb comeback season for Gresini Racing MotoGP with the Spaniard now 78 points behind Martín with just five rounds remaining.

– The 31-year-old admitted: “For that reason, of course, I’m sad, but I already said my target was done. The next step is the qualifying practice and it’s what I will be super concentrated on in the next ones to try to be better and better and try to be on those first two rows in a constant way.”
